What does NEC 690.12 actually require for rapid shutdown on a rooftop PV system?
Section 690.12 requires that PV system conductors within the array boundary be
de-energized within 30 seconds of rapid shutdown initiation. But most installers
don't realize the "array boundary" is defined as 1 foot from the array on a
rooftop, or 10 feet from the array on ground-mount. Module-level power electronics
(MLPEs) satisfy the controlled conductors requirement — but the initiation device
and labeling requirements under 690.56 are a separate compliance item entirely.

How do you properly size an OCPD for a VFD-driven motor under Article 430?
Article 430 separates motor branch-circuit protection from motor overload protection
for a reason. For a VFD installation, the OCPD must protect the conductors — not the
drive. Size the branch-circuit conductors at 125% of motor FLA per 430.22, then size
the OCPD per Table 430.52 using the VFD input current (not the motor nameplate).
Many inspectors will call out installations where the installer sized everything
off the motor FLA alone, ignoring the drive's input characteristics.

When does a delta-wye transformer require a grounding electrode system on the secondary?
Any separately derived system — and a delta-wye transformer with a bonded neutral
qualifies as one — must have a grounding electrode system per NEC 250.30. This means
a grounding electrode conductor from the neutral bond point (X0) to a suitable
grounding electrode at the transformer location. A common field mistake is relying
on the building's main GES without running a local GEC to the transformer,
especially in tenant improvement panels fed from a new transformer in the same building.

What tests are required by IEC 62446-1 before a commercial PV system can be commissioned?
IEC 62446-1 requires visual inspection, polarity verification, string open-circuit
voltage and short-circuit current measurements (compared against STC predictions),
insulation resistance testing, and functional testing of all protection devices
including the rapid shutdown system. The standard also specifies documentation
requirements — a commissioning report with as-built drawings, test results, and
equipment data is mandatory. Many installers skip the Isc measurements assuming
Voc alone is sufficient; it is not.

When can you use EMT vs. RMC in a wet location, and what does the NEC actually say?
EMT (Article 358) is listed for use in wet locations when all fittings are listed
for wet locations — but the conduit itself must be protected from physical damage
where exposed. RMC (Article 344) is suitable for all atmospheric conditions including
direct burial and concrete encasement. The confusion comes from inspection jurisdictions
that treat any outdoor location as automatically requiring RMC — that's an AHJ
amendment, not NEC code. Know the difference before you pull permit.

NEC 2023 expanded AFCI requirements — what changed and what's still confusing installers?
NEC 2023 Section 210.12 now requires AFCI protection for all 120V, 15- and 20-amp
branch circuits that supply outlets in dwelling units — this includes guest rooms,
hotel suites, and dormitories, not just single-family homes. The most commonly
misunderstood exception covers existing wiring: when extending a circuit from a
panel that doesn't have space for an AFCI breaker, a listed AFCI outlet device at
the first outlet can satisfy the requirement. But it must be the first device,
not somewhere mid-circuit.
